What does Freedom Day celebrate?

Freedom Day is the day we commemorate the first democratic elections which were held in South Africa on 27th April way back in 1994.  That day was the first time that anyone who was over the age of 18 could vote in the national elections regardless of their race.

Prior to 1994, in Apartheid South Africa, voting was not open to all races, so this landmark event opened the door for our new constitutional democracy to begin.

As we celebrate this day we remember all the people who helped to bring our country its freedom from the shackles of the past, and we thank them for the sacrifices they endured in making this happen!
